Whatever You Do, Don't Get Comfortable

I've been involved in the health club and sporting world on and off for almost 30 years. More on than off to tell the truth. And I can honestly say that the industry has barely changed. If you dug out a Muscle and Fitness magazine from 1987 and compared it to this months you'd see that half of the articles are the same! The major difference would be the 'magic' potions they're peddling for incredible muscle gains.

The other thing that stands out so much is how so many people gravitate to certain machines and develop incredible stamina and staying power. To the extent that they can jump on an elliptical machine for an hour and sweat their asses off. You would have to think that these people are burning so many calories that they'd be shedding the pounds like there's no tomorrow. Yet the exact opposite happens. Crazy but true. And I know of what I talk about because I see it day in and day out at the gym. And here's why that happens.

The human body is an extremely complex yet conservative machine. As humans evolved it became evident that we could never rely on food supplies. So in order to survive a feast or famine environment our physiology learned to become very efficient and adaptable. And we've hung on tightly to that trait. Especially when it comes to participating in exercises based upon cyclical motions such as running, cycling, rowing, swimming, elliptical machines etc.

So if I join a gym and jump on an elliptical machine I may be challenged by 10 minutes. A month later if I have attended regularly and used the machine 3 times a week I should be up to 30 minutes. Six months later it's safe to say that I'm now up to an hour. And because of this adaptability concept that we're talking about it's safe to say that from here on out I'm going to steadily use fewer calories each time I use the machine. Until it gets to the stage where I'm back to burning off about as many calories as I used to burn off in half an hour!

So what should I be doing? Well, it's not quite as simple as saying do something else on different days. Although that's definitely a start. But because everyone has different goals or requirements I suggest you get hold of one of us and let us know what's not working when it comes to you getting the health, fitness and physique you're looking for.
