Energy In = Energy Out

There was an article in today's paper discussing Lance Armstrong's sub 3 hour marathon in New York. Other than observing how impressive a feat that is for his first marathon (I've done dozens and dozens and my best is about 3:40) the author made note of how he described the difference between cycling and running.

Mel's Observation On Life,Death And Exercise

Take a look around you and find people who are 10, 20 or 30 years older than you.
Some are going to look healthy and fit. According to recent statistics more are going to look fat and unhealthy. Which one are you going to be? What plan do you have in store if you want to be that healthy slim man who plays ball with his kids? If you don't care then read no further. Because the article accompanying this summary is the cold hard truth about how you can be that person. And I suppose the best way to sum it up would be œif it were easy, everybody would do it.

What Is Fitness?

Dotted all over this website there are going to be ways to measure fitness. It may be based on recovery. Or speed. Endurance perhaps. Any way, there's going to be lots of them. And they all amount to a hill of beans in the grand scheme of things. They are nothing more than carrots that personal trainers like myself have created to keep our pea sized brains engaged with physical exercise. And in defense of that statement, it works!

Binging And Purging Diets

What really happens to the body when we subject it to diets.

I'm going to be up front and pull no punches when I say it annoys but saddens me when I hear people say œI'm going to go on the such and such diet starting Monday because it worked for me last time.? Excuse me! Do you have any idea how crazy that statement is? How could it have worked for you if you now have to go back on it again?

Fat Is To The Body As Coal Is To The Fire

Fat is to the body as coal is to the fire...and burning calories is all about heat..

There is a constant debate regarding how the body uses nutrition in relation to exercise. And most importantly, how to burn off fat. So to open up this topic I want to ask you, whomever you are the following question. What is a calorie? If you answered that it has something to do with a measurement of energy, or how we determine the composition of food, you'd be in the majority. If you said the following you're in the 2% category.

Nutrition In A Nutshell.. It's All About The 2 P's...

People tend to think that the results a client gets are attributed to the personal trainer who meets with them once, twice or three times a week. But let's be serious here. What difference does 3 hours a week with a PT mean when you consider that that same client has 112 other waking hours! Give me a break!

Whatever You Do, Don't Get Comfortable

I've been involved in the health club and sporting world on and off for almost 30 years. More on than off to tell the truth. And I can honestly say that the industry has barely changed. If you dug out a Muscle and Fitness magazine from 1987 and compared it to this months you'd see that half of the articles are the same! The major difference would be the 'magic' potions they're peddling for incredible muscle gains.

Mentor Mel telling it the way it is.

I carry a photograph with me that I show new members of the gym. Unfortunately, or perhaps I should say, fortunately it shows me in a suit sipping on a beer. If you go by a scale it was probably about 35 pounds ago. I’m 180 right now and was about 215 then.

But scales are a really, really bad method of measurement. And here’s the reason why. In my gym I bet 50% of the guys could proudly say that they are pretty close to the weight they were when they were in college. And quite a few of them can honestly say that they still fit into jeans from 10, 15 or 20 years ago. If their wives allowed them to!
