Mel's blog

We decided it's time to cut to the chase regarding who we are...

Steve and I feel that we are going to have a greater impact if we call my web site what it really is...so instead of calling it something like 'Personal training by Mel', we've decided to call it 'Weight loss by Mel'....so I'm going to back out of this blog and get the verbiage written so we can start doing some serious marketing.....

Should I be surprised that nobody showed up to my presentation at the gym?

And of course that is a rhetorical question.  I'd be a liar if I said I wasn't  saddened by the fact that nobody showed up to hear me speak.  But I feel more for Maggie who is the organizer of a whole weeks worth of programs and seminars promoting GAA - Get Active America.....a week long event.....poor girl......but, there's not a lot I can do other than show up prepared and hope that people care enough about their health to attend.....

An interesting sttement from a book I'm reading....

It's almost time for me to head to the gym but I thought I'd get some thoughts out of my head and onto paper.  I'm not going to dispute the fact that I have an issue with money.  I've heard the 2 alternative sayings about it and I'm not quite sure which makes the most sense.  "money is the root of all evil" and "what money makes people do is the root of all evil."

I guess we're decaying more than I thought.....

I was the lunch speaker at a local retirement community on Thursday and have been unable to put down how I felt about the occasion until now....that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!!!

My topic was 'To age or to decay?' Within about 5 minutes I knew I was about 30 years too late!!! There was 11 or 12 women and one man. And one woman was aging incredibly well, another was aging and the rest....they were decaying in front of my very eyes...it was one of the hardest things I've ever done.

Continuing yesterday's line of thought....

Let me first regale you with one example of my childhood. Most families on the street had at least one person who walked to the coalmine for work. A natural byproduct of having your dad work at the pit was to have lots of insurance policies! We had them with Mister Sylvester of the Pru....

I'm calmer.....but still saddened....

I sent an email announcing the site to a lot of people that I haven't talked to or communicated with in a long time. I got lots of responses back about how people were glad to hear from me and wished me well for my new venture/adventure. And quite a few were eager to read my blogs to see what I had to say. These are people who were used to reading my 'missives' as they were called back in 2002 and 2003 as I cicumnavigatged the U.S. (with a couple of trips overseas for fun) raising money for cancer. I was competing in a road race every weekend because.....well...because I could.

A weekend of dichotomies....

It's Monday morning and I'm hoping to get a bunch down before I head off the the gym for my morning victims. Lisa and I had a great weekend. If I get a chance I'm going to post the picture of my trophy from the 5K I did on Saturday morning. I came in third in my age group!! It's pretty easy to do so when there's not many people in the race. So the medal is one part of the dichotomy. Here's the other.

It's cheating....kind of....but I really like the message in this email that's going around

Those Born 1930-1979

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED the 1930's, 40's, 50's,
60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked
and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna
from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our
tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored
lead-based paints.

We had no child proof lids on medicine bottles,

Following right along on the old habit thing....

I'm working on emails that I'll be sending to new users. And as I'm a little behind on my blog entries I thought this one I wrote about nutrition would be a perfect follow up from my last entry....here it is...

Let’s talk nutrition.

If you’re one of the fortunate few (in my experience about 1 in 100 people that I train) who wants to actually gain weight, you’ll be getting a different email than this. If, however you’re just like me and everyone in my family and social circle…welcome! The scourge of the twentieth century.

Life is quite simple really....but we'll do our best to complicate it.....

One of the contributors to the forum summed up life in general when asked how he managed to quit drinking. And subsequently lose 10 pounds. Which may not sound like a lot, but he started out at 160 pounds! His words? He had to want to quit. And he had to change his habits. I responded to his entry by saying that he basically rewritten most self help books on the market.
